Becoming a determined, team player.
“Delphi Technologies has provided me with real-world experience and has shown me what it is like working for a global company. It has been such a fun, rewarding experience.”

Margaret Hastings, Communications Intern

What are your roles/responsibilities at Delphi Technologies?

This summer, here at Delphi Technologies, I am a communications intern focused on global digital media and integrated content. Given that it's a small team here in Troy, Michigan, I’m able to learn, research, and do so?many different things! Some of my own projects include a story on the 50 year anniversary of Apollo 11 in connection with Delphi Technologies, working on content for the website, research for the newsroom and working with the other interns and managers on this social intern series!

What are your interests and?activities outside of work and school?

Outside of work and school, I love running! At school, I am on the cross-country and track & field teams so I pretty much run every day and really enjoy it. It’s often hard to balance, but I’ve learned a lot about myself and how to be efficient in time management. At home, I love running on the Paint Creek Trail and in Chicago, I love running on the lake front! Additionally,?I wouldn’t say I am any good, but I also love to bake. My mom is always making delicious treats for my family so I think I get it from her.

What is one interesting fact about you?

One fact about me is that I am actually a twin! We are fraternal, she’s two minutes older and when people first meet us, they often don’t even realize we are twins.

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now where would you go and?why?

My older sister actually lives about an hour outside of Seoul, South Korea, so I would absolutely love to visit her and have her show me around the city. She sends me tons of photos and it truly looks incredible.

What does your typical day look like?

I usually get up around 6 a.m., to get ready, pack my lunch and be out the door by 7:10 a.m., to get into the office around 7:45 a.m. At Delphi Technologies, while every day is different, I am usually working on my summer projects, in meetings with the team, or staying caught up on my emails.?I always take a lunch break around noon with my other coworkers to break up the day. After work I usually go for my run, eat dinner, catch up with friends and?family, and go to sleep early as I’m usually exhausted by the night!

What has been the biggest takeaway from your experience thus far??

I think my biggest takeaway thus far is that you don’t know unless you try! This is my first internship and while I’m still not exactly sure what route I want to take my career in, the opportunity to intern at Delphi Technologies has really given me real world experience and has shown me what it is like working in the corporate world. I also find it really interesting working for a global company but am still able to have that small team connection. I love that and how everyone here has been very welcoming.

Where is home for you and how did that shape your upbringing?

I grew up in Lake Orion, Michigan. A small rural town about 30 minutes (when there isn’t traffic and/or construction) from the Delphi Technologies office in Troy. I have an older sister, twin sister and two younger brothers! Coming from a big family, I definitely learned how to work well with others and was taught to always work hard, in anything I do. I applied that mindset in both school and athletics. I played travel soccer my whole life but got more serious about running in high school. Having a good work ethic has given me many opportunities that I am so thankful for.??

What has been a challenge faced during your internship??

Although everything has been new and I’m still learning, a challenge I’ve faced has just been getting used to the 40-hour weeks. The first two weeks I was always tired! Luckily, I’ve adjusted now.

Any tips or advice for future interns?

I think the best advice I have to offer is to really apply yourself and don’t take the opportunity for granted. You’re being exposed to so much in such a short amount of time so I think understanding that is also crucial. But you also have to fun! Meet the other interns and try to connect with people. I’m lucky in that my supervisor has been amazing and very supportive on what I’ve done. She’s allowed me to get hands-on experience?in many areas and has connected me with many people here at Delphi Technologies.

What’s next for you or what are your career goals?

I’ll be heading back to school in the fall to start my junior year and I’m excited to take with me everything I’ve learned from my internship this summer. Corporate communications is something I want to continue to pursue while at school and in Chicago, so I also want to utilize my opportunities there. Who knows what the future holds but when I graduate in June 2021, I would love to either pursue grad school or be working full time for a company I fully support and one in which I can be a great asset to.
