“I think one of the main pros of an internship is the connections you are going to make.”

Christopher Cousineau, Search Engine Optimization Intern

What are your roles/responsibilities at Delphi Technologies??

I directly work on the back end for the U.S. and U.K. domains of the website and help advise and teach people in other regions about optimizing?copy, meta description, alt text, image names, keywords and headings/subheadings. I help optimize the keywords and descriptions for YouTube videos, report metrics of our search traffic and ranking in Google for our website pages, help create new pages on the website (load content), and inquire about receiving backlinks from different websites.

What is one interesting fact about you?

I play the alto saxophone in the Oakland University pep band.

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now where would you go and?why??

Australia. My girlfriend adopted a penguin for me for my birthday and he is located on Phillip Island, which is off the coast of Australia. Along with a picture, a card, and a certificate, it came with a free admission pass to the international penguin parade, which is held there.

What does your typical day look like?

When I first started I did a lot with the U.S. and U.K. versions of our website, improving meta descriptions, alt text, keywords, titles, images, subheadings, and internal linking. Now I am starting to do an audit of our international domains and coming up with SEO optimization tips for them, I don’t speak Russian, Turkish, Korean, etc, so I am having meetings with international team members to teach them about the SEO optimization changes that need to be made. I have done work with our YouTube channel to improve the descriptions, keywords, and linking back to our website and other social medias. Finally, I keep up with current Google changes and trends and implement those into our website in order to keep our content up to speed with Google's algorithm.?

What has been the biggest takeaway from your experience thus far??

It has been a good experience so far, and I am seeing what a job in my field will be like. Before I worked here I worked at Burger King and then I worked on campus helping students get involved in clubs. Getting actual experience in my major and learning every day has been the biggest takeaway. Coming in, I didn’t know anything about SEO. Now after seven months in, even though I am still learning every day, I feel a lot more comfortable and I love helping improve the company and the website.

What has been a challenge faced during your internship??

Working on a global team where SEO may not be their top priority because they have so many other assignments and tasks. Also, working with people globally in?different time zones can make it difficult to meet/talk.

Any tips or advice for future interns??

I think one of the main pros of an internship is the connections you are going to make. Think of this as a great networking opportunity, say hi to people in the hallway, meet with people you wouldn’t meet with, figure out what people do, grab lunch with people. Don’t just show up, work and leave. Also, ask for feedback on your work and love what you are doing. Know that what you are doing is beneficial to the company and know that what you are doing is making a difference.

What’s next for you or what are your career goals??

Personal goal is I want to graduate college and be able to travel a bit, also while working. Career goals I want to continue to do marketing work, but the end career goal is to be doing something either in automotive or sports marketing.?
